Before You Start

Quick Setup

1

Deal 5 Cards to Each Player

Keep your cards secret from other players. The remaining cards go face-down in the center where they will serve as a Draw Pile

2

Place the Candy Cards

Place and stack all the Candy Cards next to the Draw Pile

3

Assign the Piñata Stick

Give the Piñata Stick Card to the youngest player (or decided on your own). This card stays in front of the player who has it. You don’t hold it with your other cards in hand

4

The Count Starts at 5

Play moves clockwise from the person who has the Piñata Stick Card. At the beginning of the game, the “count” starts at 5.

A digital setup for a five-player game showing three visible cards labeled Candy Cards, Draw Pile, and Discard. Player 1 to 3 and Player 4 and 5 positions are labeled with game symbols, with Player 5 holding a Piñata Stick icon.

How the Game Works

Gameplay

Play a Card, Move the Count

At the beginning of the game, the “count” starts at 5.

Players may play a single card that will either increase or decrease the “count”. That player will announce what the “count” changes to based on the value of the card being played.

For example, a -2 Card is played. That player would say “3” since 5 minus 2 equals 3. That player’s turn is over and play moves to the next person. If the next player then plays a +3 Card, that player will now say “6” as the “count” was at 3 and adding 3 brings the “count” to 6.

Flashcards with mathematical operations, one showing negative two and another showing positive three.

Play continues until the “count” reaches 0 or 10 exactly. If a player does this on their turn, they earn a Candy Card. If that player also has the Piñata Stick Card, they’ll earn 2 Candy Cards instead of just 1.

After scoring, move all cards in the Discard Pile to the Out of Play pile and reset the count back to 5. Play continues.

Hit 0 or 10 - Earn a Candy Card

Text stating 'First player to collect 5 Candy Cards wins the game.'

Whoever holds the Piñata Stick Card earns 2 Candy Cards when they score instead of just 1 Candy Card — but they're also the biggest target at the table. The Piñata Stick Card can be stolen, and Rotten Candy makes the stick holder lose double the candy (2 Candy Cards instead of 1). It’s a double edged “stick”!

The Piñata Stick Changes Everything

On your turn you may also play a Utility Card. These cards shake up the game and give you advantages — or let you block other players. See the full card reference below for what each one does.

Edge Cases

What If Scenarios

WHAT IF I CAN’T PLAY ANY CARD?

In the rare case this happens, you may discard one card to the bottom of the Draw Pile and draw a replacement. You must then wait until your next turn to play.

WHAT IF THE DRAW PILE RUNS OUT?

If there are no more cards to draw, the cards in the Discard/Out of Play Piles may be shuffled and used as a new Draw Pile.

WHAT IF WE FORGET THE COUNT?

Simply recount the values of the card in the Discard Pile. You’ll easily be able to determine the count since it ALWAYS starts at 5. For example, a +3, -2, +3, -1 in the Discard Pile means the count is at 8 (5, plus 3, minus 2, plus 3, minus 1 equals 8).

PIÑATA STICK + PIÑATA POWER = 2 CANDY CARDS?

No. If you hold the Piñata Stick Card and play Piñata Power, you still only take 1 Candy Card from the target player. The Piñata Stick bonus only applies when you score by hitting 0 or 10.

WHEN DO I DRAW CARDS?

Always draw cards at the beginning of your turn — never at the end or mid-turn. Draw until you have 5 cards in your hand.

WHEN SHOULD I CLEAR
THE DISCARD PILE?

After any player scores a Candy Card, move the entire Discard Pile to the Out of Play area and start a new Discard Pile. This helps keeps the count clear.
